Running the length of the Great Ocean Road, the coastal area around Apollo Bay puts on an endless number of beach, reef and point breaks suitable for beginner through to expert surfers.
Typically, they are right hand breaks, performing best with south/east swell and north/west winds, however, there are exceptions to these rules spotted around.
Apollo Bay surf lessons are available at Apollo Bay Surf & Kayak. With classes offered on the foreshore, this Apollo Bay surf school is suitable for adults and kids.
The classes are run by qualified coaches, who teach in the water — so to learn at this surf school in Apollo Bay you need to be able to swim at least 25 metres. Lessons can be two hours long and includes the use of full-length wetsuits. You are also taught on soft ‘G’-Boards (which don’t have sharp edges). Our aim is to get you standing on the board in your first lesson!

Marengo is a small township just 3kms west of Apollo Bay, surrounded by beautiful beaches it’s definitely a must see. There’s a small wave on the inside of the marine sanctuary – other offshore and beach breaks are for experienced surfers only. The Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary is home to the local colony of Australian Fur Seals, get up close and personal by taking a scenic boat tripor kayaking tour. Marengo beach is a perfect place for a Rock Pool Ramble, take the children to find the small crabs scuttling for cover or fossick for shells.
Skenes Creek is an easily accessed beach offering a left and a right break. Conditions can be rough and it’s recommended for experienced surfers. It is also a great beach for families with rock pooling and plenty of space for beach activities.
