For the first two days of your week away in Apollo Bay, you’ll be staying in a ‘hike-in hike-out’ campsite exclusively for Great Ocean Walkers. Camping equipment, food and transfers are included — your bags are taken to the campsite and the camp is all set up for you so all you have to do is enjoy the stunning scenery as you hike through tall forests, coastal heathlands, wild rocky shores, river estuaries, remote beaches and windswept cliff-tops. If you’re staying in the area for longer, there are extended options available.
Back in Apollo Bay, start day 3 with a refreshing early morning swim at the beach before a relaxing massage after your two days of hiking. Enjoy breakfast at one of the local cafes and take a leisurely browse around the shops — be sure to visit the local glass studies that are home to unique glass products made by local artists.
For the afternoon, it’s time to head out onto the water for a fishing charter where you’ll have the chance to catch flathead, snapper, sharks and maybe even tuna! End the day with dinner at one of the local restaurants. A week away in Apollo Bay cannot be had without trying the fresh local seafood so be sure to order the ‘catch of the day’.
On day 4 of your week away in Apollo Bay, it’s time to learn to surf with surfing lessons taken by a qualified coach.
For lunch, maybe grab some fish & chips to eat down on the beach. In the afternoon head out to the Cape Otway Lightstation. Learn about the local history and enjoy the magnificent views from the Lighthouse Balcony.
Getting to Apollo Bay is half the fun. If you’re planning a 4 day road trip, you need to take the scenic route along the Great Ocean Road (exit the Princes Freeway at the Torquay exit to take this route). It is approximately a 3 hour drive from Melbourne CBD to Apollo Bay (not including stops along the way). On your 4 day road trip, you’ll get to see some stunning natural attractions including the 12 Apostles which are one of the region’s highlights and there are fantastic accommodation options right along the coast.
